Damask is a richly patterned fabric of cotton, linen, silk, wool and synthetic fibres. Though originally produced in China, India and Persia, damask is named after the 12th century weavers of Damascus who were famed for their magnificent patterns, the quality of their silk yarns and the intensity of their colourful dyes. They were known to even add gold or silver thread to the fabric for extra opulence! Traditionally, damask fabric is woven with one warp (vertically placed yarn) and one weft (horizontally placed yarn drawn under and over the warp) interchanging throughout the pattern. Damask wallpapers mimic this look and are seen as very luxurious and sophisticated. Damask wallpapers have patterns which are extremely intricate and ornate and so they are often used only one a feature wall. They designs look particularly good in large hallways/entrances and staircases as well as in lounges and dining rooms, especially those with and old-fashioned, formal and elegant feel.
